Find out how to protect yourself from the number one crime in the U.S. Former con-man-turned-FBI-consultant Frank Abagnale, whose life was the basis for the Steven Spielberg movie Catch Me If You Can, is the premiere authority on identity theft. In this guide, he reveals everything you need to know to avoid becoming a victim yourself.
No one knows better than Abagnale just how prevalent identity theft has become. Among the facts he has uncovered, perhaps the most alarming is this: 49% of all victims have no idea how their identity was stolen, and they never find out. The guide does answer many key questions, however, including:
How to protect your personal information at the office, at home, and online
How to decipher your credit report
How to find out if this crime has already happened to you
How and why identity thieves get away with it
Although the facts are chilling, the "Real U Guide to Identity Theft" is anything but cold. In typical Real U style, Abagnale takes a wry look at the truth and spells out the facts in colorful, magazine-style spreads, so that learning how to protect yourself from this crime is almost as much fun as catching one of the criminals would be.
When it comes to protecting your computer and its data, what you don't know can hurt you- which is precisely why TechTV personality Becky Worley has written this info-packed volume that carefully outlines the steps you can take to secure your data, your identity, and your privacy in an age of cyber-crime and near-constant virus scares.
In the warm, friendly, reassuring style viewers have come to associate with Becky's "Security Alert" segments on TechTV's TechLive news show, this volume delves into all of the areas where you and your computer may be vulnerable to attack: hacking, identity theft, online purchasing, virus attacks, email and Internet scams, online dating and communities, kids and the Internet, and more.
Each chapter begins with a real-life disaster story before providing useful tips on how to avoid a similar fate. Practical advice, email and Internet rules to live by, tips to protect your privacy, and more round out the package.
"Phishing" is the hot new identity theft scam. An unsuspecting victim receives an e-mail that seems to come from a bank or other financial institution, and it contains a link to a Web site where s/he is asked to provide account details. The site looks legitimate, and 3 to 5 percent of people who receive the e-mail go on to surrender their information -- to crooks. If that weren't enough, the crooks have expanded their operations to include malicious code that steals identity information without the computer user's knowledge. Thousands of computers are compromised each day, and phishing code is increasingly becoming part of the standard exploits.
Written by a phishing security expert at a top financial institution, this unique book helps IT professionals respond to phishing incidents. After describing in detail what goes into phishing expeditions, the author provides step-by-step directions for discouraging attacks and responding to those that have already happened.

Tip of the Day
If you receive pre-screened credit card offers in the mail, but don't shred them after you decide you don't want to accept the offer, identity thieves could retrieve the offers for their own use without your knowledge. Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688) to opt out of receiving these pre-screened credit card offers. The three major credit bureaus use the same toll-free number to let consumers choose to not receive pre-screened credit offers.
Today's Story
"My purse was stolen in December 1990. In February 1991, I started getting notices of bounced checks. About a year later, I received information that someone using my identity had defaulted on a number of lease agreements and bought a car. In 1997, I learned that someone had been working under my Social Security number for a number of years. A man had been arrested and used my SSN on his arrest sheet. There's a hit in the FBI computers for my SSN with a different name and gender. I can't get credit because of this situation. I was denied a mortgage loan, employment, credit cards, and medical care for my children. I've even had auto insurance denied, medical insurance and tuition assistance denied." - From a consumer complaint to the FTC, January 2, 2001
